NCAA Basketball: Ranking the top 25 team backcourts for 2022-23 season
One of the best perimeter players in the freshman class is Cason Wallace, a 6’4 combo guard out of Texas that has elite defensive instincts and is a more than capable offensive player. He’s comfortable playing off the ball (which he’ll have to next season), a solid shooter, and slasher to the basket. Wallace is a top-10 overall prospect for a reason and will likely start alongside the returning starting point guard.
Sahvir Wheeler showed that he can produce at a high level and do it on a winning team after transferring over from Georgia. The 5’11 playmaker averaged 10.1 ppg and 6.9 apg last season, good for first in the SEC and 3rd in NCAA Basketball. That includes five double-digit passing games and 14 assists in a win over North Florida. While Wheeler’s shooting from deep will never be his strength, his decision-making in screen actions allows him to give the Wildcats his own offense.
Kentucky had Iowa transfer, CJ Fredrick, on the roster but he missed all of last season with an injury. He was a starter with the Hawkeyes in the two years prior, shooting 47% from three-point range. His shooting ability will make things easier for the other guards and allow Wheeler to rack up even more assists.
The other newcomer to the roster is Antonio Reeves, a transfer from Illinois State that averaged a team-high 20.1 ppg on 47% shooting from the field and 39% from three-point range. He had 61 points combined in the first two games of the season and the scoring didn’t slow down, with Reeves going for a career-high 34 points in an overtime win over Valparaiso. His consistent games of offensive production are a good sign that he can be a double-digit scorer for Kentucky next season. And if that happens, the backcourt will be in very good shape.
