1. Iowa Hawkeyes

2021-22: 79.6 points per game

Head Coach Fran McCaffery and Iowa Basketball have done it once, so why not predict that they will do it again? Not only did the Hawkeyes finish as the highest scoring team in Big Ten play after losing their leading scorer Luka Garza to the professional ranks, but the Hawkeyes were also the fifth highest scoring team in the nation.  A major reason for their offensive numbers was the vast improvement of Keegan Murray who averaged over 23 points per game to give the Hawkeyes consecutive players to lead the conference in scoring.

Next up to benefit from Coach McCaffery’s system could very well be Kris Murray. The 6’8 forward will be promoted along with fellow bench players Tony Perkins (7.4 ppg) and Payton Sandfort (5 ppg) into the starting line-up with returning starters Paul McCaffery (10.5 ppg) and Filip Rebraca (5.8 ppg). The personnel will change slightly, but the system will stay the same.

The loss of Jordan Bohannon – who was the only Hawkeye to connect on more than two three-pointers per game  – will cause the penetrate and kick to be slightly less formidable, but it will not change the spread offense with McCaffery and Sandfort coming of multiple screens for jumpers. Keegan will primarily be involved in those screens in hopes of creating a mismatch of the switch down low, or for the ball handler up top against a bigger defender.

Luka Garza and Keegan Murray were talented players for Iowa, but Coach McCaffery’s system contributed to their success. Now Garza and Murray no longer remain, but the system does, along with a rotation that includes its top seven players.
