NCAA Basketball: 10 best players from state of Alaska of last decade
By Joey Loose
6. Damon Sherman-Newsome – Colgate
Another native of Anchorage, Sherman-Newsome took a strange route in his collegiate career, beginning at Angelina Junior College in Texas. After one season there, he spent the last three years at Colgate, becoming an important piece of the puzzle for the Raiders team near the beginning of current coach Matt Langel’s tenure with the program.
In his first season, Sherman-Newsome came off the bench, though he appeared in every game and averaged just over 6 points per game. His junior year saw him work his way into the starting lineup, averaging double-digit points, highlighted by a 28-point effort against Lehigh at the end of the regular season. His final year saw him lead the Raiders with 14.7 points per game, while finishing in the top 20 in the Patriot League in most offensive categories.
Sherman-Newsome became a consistent scorer at Colgate, and finished his career certainly as one of their best scorers of the decade, finding his place in decent shape on some of the all-time leaderboards in Raiders history. Unfortunately, Sherman-Newsome’s playing career came before Colgate’s recent run of success, but he still clearly an important player, even if the team finished below .500 in his three seasons there.
