NCAA Basketball: 10 best players from state of Connecticut of last decade
By Joey Loose
8. Cane Broome – Sacred Heart / Cincinnati
We continue the list with another former star in the NEC, but Broome impacted more than just one program. A 6’0 point guard from East Hartford, Broome arrived on campus at Sacred Heart in 2014, starring with the Pioneers during a pair of seasons. He then spent the final two years of his collegiate career at Cincinnati, playing a less important role but still getting a chance to showcase his talent.
It’s his efforts at Sacred Heart that got Broome on the radar. After an impressive freshman season, his sophomore campaign was even more impressive, averaging 23.1 points per game for the Pioneers. After sitting out the next season, he spent two more years at Cincinnati, mostly coming off the bench for a Bearcats team that made a pair of NCAA Tournaments. Most of his impressive moments came with the Pioneers, including a 39-point effort over Fairleigh Dickinson back in 2016.
Broome was named NEC Player of the Year as a sophomore before transferring and then adjusted to his role with the Bearcats. A star in the NEC, Broome was still a useful piece for Mick Cronin at Cincinnati; he just clearly wasn’t having the same impact as when he was the stud on the roster, averaging just 8.1 points per game as a Bearcat. He’s been playing professionally in Canada and likely has a few more years left in him, beginning that professional career just three seasons ago.
