NCAA Basketball: 10 best players from state of Delaware of last decade
By Joey Loose
2. A. J. English III – Iona
Son of a former NBA player with the same name, English paved his way, starring at guard in Wilmington and attending prep school in Connecticut. While a wrist injury limited his freshman season, he was a major force across four seasons at Iona, arriving in 2012 and leaving quite the legacy behind by the time he had departed.
Following that limited first season, he was a full-time starter and star at Iona. By the time he was a senior, he was averaging 22.6 points and 6.2 assists per game, putting up impressive numbers in each of his final three seasons. He scored a career-high 46 points as a senior in a win over Fairfield and also had 28 points in an NCAA Tournament loss to Iowa State in 2016.
English was an All-MAAC First Team honoree in each of his final three seasons, leading the conference in points and 3-pointers as a junior, in points per game as a senior, and in total assists in both seasons. His impact on the court was enormous for an Iona program that made a pair of NIT appearances before that breakthrough Tournament dance in 2016. English has played internationally in the six years since his collegiate career ended, most recently in Poland and Germany, but remains among the all-time scoring leaders in Iona program history.
