NCAA Basketball: 10 best players from state of Delaware of last decade
By Joey Loose
10. Marcus Gilbert – Fairfield
A respectable 6’6 forward from Smyrna, Gilbert landed at Fairfield in the MAAC way back in 2012, a decade ago. He spent four seasons in Stags’ frontcourt, with most of that time coming as a starter for the team. A decent contributor as a freshman, he blossomed into an impactful scoring forward in his final seasons.
A talented shooter, he averaged just under 36% on 3-pointers for his entire career, finishing top 10 in the MAAC on three different occasions. After meager contributions as a freshman, he was up to 13.9 points per game as a sophomore and surpassed 16 per game in each of his final two seasons. He had a career-high 33 points as a senior against Columbia and helped lead the Stags to a pair of CIT appearances.
One of the conference’s top scoring forwards, Gilbert was named to the All-MAAC First Team for his efforts his senior season, one year after being on the conference’s Third Team. Not only was he a solid shooter and scorer, finishing 12th in the conference in field goal percentage as a senior, but he was also an above-average rebounder and free throw shooter. He’s spent much of the last six seasons since graduation playing overseas, most recently in Taiwan.
