NCAA Basketball: 10 best players from state of Delaware of last decade
By Joey Loose
8. Trevor Cooney – Syracuse
After starring at guard in Wilmington, Cooney was a Top 100 prospect in the 2011 class who chose Syracuse. He redshirted his freshman year, with plenty of other talent ahead of him on the depth chart, and saw minimal minutes as a redshirt freshman. Those last three years he was an important piece of this Syracuse roster, standing out as an impressive long-range shooter.
That first season saw minimal contributions from Cooney, but he was along for the ride as the Orange advanced to the Final Four in 2013. He scored 27 points in his first game as a starter as a sophomore and later that year had a career-high 33 points against Notre Dame. In each of his final three seasons, he was a major piece of the backcourt, averaging at least 12 points per game. As a senior, he helped lead Syracuse back to the Final Four, scoring 22 points in their loss to North Carolina in his final collegiate game.
Cooney led the ACC in 3-point field goals as a sophomore and finished in second as a senior; while his 3-point field goals rank him among the top shooters in Syracuse history. Additionally, he became the first player to appear in multiple Final Fours for the Orange, playing a much more significant role in that second appearance in 2016. He spent a couple of seasons playing professional basketball, while also featuring in the TBT on Boeheim’s Army.
