4. Nah’Shon Hyland – VCU
A former Delaware Player of the Year and an explosive guard from Wilmington, “Bones” Hyland was a hot commodity out of high school, landing as a Top 100 prospect on many recruiting sites. Hyland spent his collegiate career at VCU, playing under head coach Mike Rhoades and arriving on campus in 2019. Due to the success of his sophomore year, he played just two seasons for the Rams but had quite an impact in that short time on campus.
As a freshman, Hyland worked his way into the fold, entering the starting lineup late in the year and putting together some solid performances down the stretch. It was as a sophomore that things really clicked for Hyland, as he’d average 19.5 points and 4.7 rebounds per game, helping lead the Rams to a second-place finish in the A-10. That sophomore year was full of memorable moments, including a 30-point performance over Dayton in the A-10 Tournament, and an earlier game where he hit 7 3-pointers against North Carolina A&T.
Not only was he on the A-10 All-Freshman team, but that breakout campaign saw him named A-10 Player of the Year as a sophomore, making him the first VCU player to win that honor. He led the conference in points and 3-point field goals during that season while also coming in third in steals and playing a major role on the team. Taken in the first round of the 2021 NBA Draft, Hyland spent much of last season playing for the Denver Nuggets.
