4. James Palmer – Miami / Nebraska
Who doesn’t like a 6’6 guard who can contribute all over the court? Palmer was a stud at the high school level who found his way to Miami in 2014, committing to play for Jim Larranaga and the Hurricanes. After two seasons as a minimal contributor, Palmer transferred, spending his final two seasons at Nebraska and making a much more significant impact on the court.
Those first two years saw limited minutes for Palmer, who had minimal contributions even on the Hurricanes’ Sweet Sixteen team in 2016. Palmer sat out the next season, spending two fantastic years at Nebraska, averaging 17.2 and 19.7 points per game respectively in those seasons. Among those dynamic performances was a career-high 34 points against Rutgers in the Big Ten Tournament during his senior season, while he matched that total against Ohio State the previous season.
The Cornhuskers benefited from Palmer’s outbreak, and he did as well, earning All-Big Ten First Team honors as a junior and Third Team honors as a senior. He led the entire Big Ten in free throws in both seasons and ranked among the top 5 in the league in points per game. After becoming a scoring machine and setting some records at Nebraska, Palmer has spent the last three years of his professional career mostly overseas, most recently in Poland.
