NCAA Basketball: 10 best players from state of Florida of last decade
By Joey Loose
1. Joel Berry II – North Carolina
If anything else, it’s hard to say that Berry didn’t have a very satisfying collegiate career. The 6’0 guard originally from Apopka was recruited by Roy Williams and played for the legendary coach at North Carolina from 2014 to 2018. Those four years saw him become a consistent piece in the backcourt, contributing on a team that won the national championship in 2017.
Berry came off the bench as a freshman, but worked his way into a much bigger role for his final three seasons, averaging 12.8 points per game as a sophomore, including a 20-point performance in the national title game loss to Villanova. Twelve months later, Berry had 22 points and 6 assists in the Tar Heels’ title game win over Gonzaga. His senior year didn’t see another deep Tournament run, but did see him average 17.1 points and 3.2 assists per game in his best statistical campaign.
Berry’s accomplishments were numerous, including being named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2017 NCAA Tournament. He earned ACC Tournament MVP as a sophomore and was twice featured on the All-ACC team. He had a monumental impact on this program during his time in Chapel Hill, clearly spearheading that trip to the title. Berry played professionally for a few seasons and now works for the ACC Network as an analyst.
