NCAA Basketball: 5 best players from state of Hawaii of last decade
By Joey Loose
5. Hugh Hogland – Portland / UC Davis
A 6’10 forward from Waimanalo, Hogland found his way over to Portland, enrolling at the school back in 2017. He was a limited contributor initially with the Pilots, redshirting his first season, but was a solid piece for the program as a sophomore. After three years in Portland, Hogland spent the end of his collegiate career down at UC Davis.
Hogland saw most of his career action during that redshirt freshman season, appearing in 30 games for the Pilots. He averaged 4.4 points and 3.2 rebounds per game, including a career-high 13-point effort against Sacramento State, all while shooting 53% for the season. The following season saw him appear in just 13 games for the Pilots, leading to his transfer to UC Davis. However, he’d play just two games for the Aggies, with his season significantly hampered by a hand injury.
Hogland never really had his breakout moment in the college game but was still a useful piece for Portland early in his career. He was a former volleyball star who opted to stick with basketball and continues to play the game today, most recently suiting up in the top basketball league in Japan. Hogland may not have accomplished a lot in his career, but he still did enough to set himself up well for his future.
