NCAA Basketball: 10 best players from state of Indiana of last decade
By Joey Loose
1. Kyle Guy – Virginia
Last but certainly not least is Guy, who wasn’t just a regular guy from Indianapolis. A 6’2 guard and top recruit, he found his way to Tony Bennett and Virginia, arriving on campus in 2016. By the time he left campus three seasons later, Guy had experienced the ultimate low and the ultimate high of the college game.
He was a contributor as a freshman, but settling into a starring and starting role in the backcourt his final two collegiate seasons. He averaged 14.1 points per game as a sophomore, including dynamic play down the stretch as Virginia won the ACC Tournament, though the season famously ended at the hands of 16-seed UMBC. Junior year was the ultimate success, as Guy helped lead the Cavaliers to the national championship, hitting the game-winning free throws in the Final Four against Auburn and scoring 24 points in the national title game.
Guy was All-ACC First Team each of those final two seasons and was the Tournament’s MVP as a sophomore. Not only did he help the Cavaliers capture their first national title, but he was named NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player for those clutch performances. He led the conference in 3-pointers and left school as one of the ACC’s most accurate long range shooters of all time. Guy was a late draft pick a few months later and has bounced around the best three years including time in the NBA.
