NCAA Basketball: 10 best players from state of Indiana of last decade
By Joey Loose
8. R. J. Hunter – Georgia State
A 6’6 guard originally from Indianapolis, Hunter certainly was a presence during his high school career. That success translate to the college game, where he played under father Ron for three seasons at Georgia State. Hunter was given every chance to be successful and really developed into a mid-major star, culminating his career with a magical moment in March.
A starter from the beginning, Hunter averaged at least 17 points per game in each of his three collegiate seasons, with his numbers improving each year. He had a double-double in his first career game against Duke, scored 41 in a win at UTSA as a sophomore, and led the Panthers to the NCAA Tournament as a junior. Of course, he didn’t just lead them there, he hit the game-winning shot to defeat Baylor in the opening round, causing his father to fall off his stool in an unforgettable March moment.
Before he even hit that game-winning three-pointer, Hunter was already highly-regarded, having won Sun Belt Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons. He led the conference in free throw percentage, points, and 3-pointers at various times in his career and certainly emerged as an incredible talent from that league. He was drafted near the end of the first round by the Boston Celtics, spent some time playing in the NBA, and most recently was overseas in Australia.
