NCAA Basketball: Strengths and weaknesses of each top-25 team for 2022-23 season
12. Texas Longhorns
Strength: Backcourt
Last season, it was Marcus Carr playing with Shaka Smart’s players in Chris Beard’s system. It simply didn’t work out but this year’s roster is an upgrade. Iowa State transfer Tyrese Hunter can run the point while Carr plays more off-ball, while five-star freshman Arterio Morris will have an impact off the bench.
New Mexico State transfer Sir’Jabari Rice is a veteran scoring guard that won’t need much usage but can still have an impact. If Carr looks anywhere like he did during his days in Minnesota, the Longhorns will be in great shape in the backcourt.
Weakness: Frontcourt
Timmy Allen returns as the team’s leading scorer and he was solid as the combo forward but for the most part, he’s going to be the only source of offense inside by playing the undersized four-spot. Christian Bishop will be the undersized five and will be forced to play extended minutes if Dylan Disu doesn’t have an impact. He went from being a force at Vanderbilt to being injured and ineffective last season for Texas.
The Longhorns are a solid defensive unit but the concern is that bigger teams can overwhelm Bishop and Allen inside. And if they don’t get enough offense, that’ll put pressure on the revamped to win them most of their games, which didn’t work at times last season.
