NCAA Basketball: Strengths and weaknesses of each top-25 team for 2022-23 season
11. Indiana Hoosiers
Strength: Depth
Indiana is another team that returns almost everyone of importance, including All-Big Ten center Trayce Jackson-Davis and 5th-year point guard Xavier Johnson. The amount of career production and experience coming back all over the roster is something few NCAA Basketball programs can compare with. Plus, there are a ton of underclassmen vying for playing time as well.
That includes a pair of five-star freshmen in Jalen Hood-Schifino and Malik Reneau, two guys who’ll figure to be part of the rotation early. If either of them turns out to be a star to join Jackson-Davis, then the Hoosiers could be looking at a deep run in March.
Weakness: Three-point shooting
Like TCU, Indiana wasn’t a prolific shooting team from deep. And making matters worse, Parker Stewart, their best individual shooter, and only player to make more than 40 three-pointers last season, transferred out. Johnson and Miller Kopp shot decent percentages but were inconsistent at times.
The Hoosiers have a good enough frontcourt to where they don’t have to force up 20 three-pointers as other teams will. But there will be games where they’ll have to avoid going 2-15 from deep if they’re to be consistent enough to win a Big Ten title. The backcourt will determine that and while they have talent, their inconsistencies will have to be addressed.
