NCAA Basketball: Strengths and weaknesses of each top-25 team for 2022-23 season
20. Dayton Flyers
Strength: Breakout potential everywhere
With the exception of Toumani Camara, six of the top seven scorers for Dayton all have three years of eligibility to go and already have looked like stars in the making. The Flyers were one of the youngest teams in the country last season and still won 24 games and just missed out on the NCAA Tournament.
Bringing everyone back adds more continuity and chemistry, while sophomores Malachi Smith and Da’Ron Holmes have the potential to be 1st-Team All-Atlantic 10 players and potentially more. There’s plenty of talent returning and assuming all of them improves, the Flyers could end up being the team to beat in the league.
Weakness: Spacing inside
There’s not to like about Dayton’s offense, including the frontcourt duo of Holmes and Toumani Camara. They were the lone double-digit scorers on the roster and got most of the usage but when the team struggles on that side of the ball, it’s due to not getting anything inside.
When those two are on the court at the same time, it can be hard for the guards to operate since both of them are usually inside the arc. Camara shot 22/65 from deep (34%) and has become a threat of sorts but he’s best when in the paint. Dayton has high potential but there are some clogs in the offense that can hurt them at times.
