NCAA Basketball: Top 25 team frontcourts for 2022-23 season
17. Dayton Flyers
The Flyers have almost everyone back from last season, including the starting frontcourt duo of DaRon Holmes and Toumani Camara. Holmes, a former top-50 prospect, led the team with 12.8 ppg and 6.1 rpg as a freshman on 65% shooting from the field. The 6’10 center had three double-doubles and a career-high 28 points against UMass in the conference tournament.
Holmes was the A-10 Rookie of the Year and was an all-defender and will be a national breakout candidate to watch. Next to him is Camara, the transfer from Georgia who was second on the team with 10.9 ppg and 6.9 rpg and seemed to fit better next to Holmes in the frontcourt in the ladder half of last season. If these two can fully gel (and Camara can shoot better from deep), the Flyers’ offense can go to another level.
R.J. Blakney started all 35 games at the small forward spot, averaging 6.5 ppg and 3.5 rpg. While he wasn’t a big offensive threat, the 6’6 forward is a capable shooter and two-way player. And there’s plenty of depth behind the starters, including stretch forward Mustapha Amzil and 6’11 transfer forward Tyrone Baker, who comes from Georgia and is the replacement for Moulaye Sissoko on the roster.
Even if Holmes doesn’t take the next step in his development towards stardom, the Flyers’ frontcourt is already in good shape. But if the center does indeed become a national name, this team could make a run in March.
