NCAA Basketball: Top 25 team frontcourts for 2022-23 season
15. Villanova Wildcats
Cam Whitmore had a chance to leave the Wildcats after head coach Jay Wright suddenly retired this offseason but elected to stay with the new leader Kyle Neptune. With guard Justin Moore expected to be sidelined to start the season after getting injured in March, the 6’7 combo forward has the chance to be the focal point of the offense.
The five-star freshman can score anywhere on the court and is a two-way star in the making. It’s rare for freshmen to star at Villanova but they haven’t had someone like Whitmore whose game is ready-made for stardom. He’s going to start and can play and defend multiple positions.
The other returning forward is Eric Dixon, who averaged 9.1 ppg and 6.4 rpg last season. He played second fiddle to Jermaine Samuels in the frontcourt but he’ll be leading things this time around. He’s an underrated shooter, solid defender, and capable of being a go-to guy on offense, as evidenced by his 24 points and 12 rebounds against UConn.
Two former top-100 recruits also in the frontcourt are Trey Patterson and Nnanna Njoku. Both played a combined fewer than 100 minutes but with Samuels and Brandon Slater gone, look for them to have larger roles this upcoming season. What they do with it could determine how good the overall team is while they wait for Moore to return.
