NCAA Basketball: Top 25 team frontcourts for 2022-23 season
12. Baylor Bears
Despite there not being a ton of quality power forwards in the transfer portal this offseason, Baylor was able to land two of them that should have an impact. The big name is Jalen Bridges, a redshirt junior from West Virginia that averaged 8.4 ppg and 4.8 rpg last season.
Bridges may not have had the biggest role with the Mountaineers but has plenty of potential. He had 22 points on 10/10 from the free throw line against Oklahoma State, along with 12 points and 11 rebounds in a matchup versus Kansas. The 6’7 forward is an impressive athlete and defender and his offense has a high ceiling.
The other newcomer is Caleb Lohner, who averaged 7.0 ppg and 6.7 rpg in two seasons at BYU. He was known for being a great rebounder and physical athlete but not much of a scorer. Lohner will be a solid frontcourt rotation piece in the frontcourt, even if he isn’t much of an offensive threat.
Back for a 5th-year is starting center Flo Thamba. He’s a quality defensive big man and starter on the 2021 national-title-winning team. He averaged 6.2 ppg last season and isn’t much of a scorer but plays his role well. Also part of that title team and on this roster is forward Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua, who got hurt last season but has a chance to be ready for opening day. He’s a great defensive athlete and was last season’s Big 12 Co-Defensive Player of the Year despite playing 20 mpg off the bench.
With Zach Loveday and freshman Josh Ojianwuna off the bench, Baylor has plenty of depth in the frontcourt this season. If Bridges or Lohner breaks out at the four-spot, this team could end up back in the national title picture.
