NCAA Basketball: Top 25 team frontcourts for 2022-23 season
5. Indiana Hoosiers
Trayce Jackson-Davis has been a star ever since he arrived at Indiana and last season was no different. The 6’9 forward averaged a team-leading 18.3 ppg and 8.1 rpg on 59% shooting from the field. He had numerous big games, such as the career-high 43 points against Marshall, 30 points, eight rebounds, six assists versus Wisconsin, and 31 points and 10 rebounds in the Big Ten Tournament against Iowa.
Jackson-Davis is not only one of the best offensive players in the country, but he’s also a good defender as well. The forward is competing with Dickinson and Edey for Big Ten Player of the Year and an All-American spot but assuming Indiana wins the league (projected preseason favorites), the star Hoosier will have the edge.
Also returning for Indiana is Race Thompson who had his best campaign last season, averaging 11.1 ppg and 7.5 rpg. He became a consistent double-digit contributor on offense and a solid defender, making him and Jackson-Davis a legit frontcourt duo. If Thompson has a big 5th-year and continues his trend of more scoring production, that just makes Indiana even more of a problem.
The Hoosiers also return 6’8 forward Miller Kopp at the small forward position. He averaged 6.0 ppg but was a threat from deep, making 36% from three-point range. Adding depth off the bench is five-star combo forward freshman Malik Reneau. He’s another capable offensive player that’ll be a national breakout candidate a year from now but will have to settle for 15 mpg off the bench this season. But if he’s good, allows Indiana to have a formidable frontcourt for all 40 minutes.
