NCAA Basketball: Top 25 team frontcourts for 2022-23 season
23. LSU Tigers
Last year’s frontcourt group was probably in the top-15 range but after Will Wade’s firing, there’s been a complete roster turnover. But credit to new head coach Matt McMahon, who was able to field a competitive group inside.
It helps that he was able to bring with him his best player at Murray State last season in KJ Williams. The 6’10 forward led the team with 18.0 ppg and 8.4 rpg and was the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year. He had 33 points and 15 rebounds against Tennessee-Martin, as well as a career-high 39 points at Tennessee State.
Likely joining him in the starting lineup is another transfer in Kendal Coleman, a 6’8 center from Northwestern State. He averaged 15.4 ppg and 10.1 rpg in 29 mpg last season, including 18 points and 20 rebounds versus Southeastern Louisiana. Coleman may have played in the Southland Conference but he did have some good games against power conference competition, including 19 points against Oklahoma and double-doubles versus LSU and Texas A&M.
There’s plenty of depth behind these two, including Mississippi State transfer Derek Fountain, four-star freshman Shawn Phillips, and Jalen Reed, a potential hidden gem recruit as a power forward. The lack of proven production at the SEC level is what limits them but Williams and Coleman have a chance to be a very competitive frontcourt in the league.
