Rhode Island Basketball landed 2023 New Jersey guard Cam Estevez late Monday afternoon. He announced his commitment to the program via his social media accounts.

The 6-foot-4 guard from Teaneck, NJ chose Rhode Island Basketball over the likes of VCU, St. Bonaventure, Miami Ohio, UCF, and Mississippi State.

He flourishes on the open floor where he has made high-level plays as a shooter and a ball handler.

Estevez played most recently on the Under Armour Association (UAA) circuit with the Riverside Hawks where he was a standout. The top-250 player joins an electric backcourt that will benefit the future of Rhody basketball. He certainly has caught the eyes and attention of several scouts and coaches across the nation.

Estevez was connected to Coach Duane Woodward and took his official visit with the Rhode Island Rams in July.

Rhode Island now has a pair of committed guards who will prepare for the Ocean State in Connecticut next season. Cam Estevez will contribute valuable minutes at Canterbury School while Connor Dubsky will star at Putnam Science Academy.

They join a dominant frontcourt consisting of Stephens City, VA forward Adrian Myers and New Zealand paint presence KC Nwafor to wrap up the Class of 2023.

Since March, all eyes have been on Coach Archie Miller and his staff consisting of Duane Woodward, Kenny Johnson, and Austin Carroll to recruit young talent. They have more than exceeded Rhody fans’ expectations assessing several areas lacking depth for the future.

The focus shifts in just a few weeks to the 2022-23 season where many are expecting Rhode Island to be sneaky good in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

The Rams have retained six players from last season’s roster, however, they will have nine new players in Keaney blue next season. Coach Miller and his staff have taken advantage of the NCAA transfer portal, high school, and international recruitment.

A couple of returners to look out for this season are senior guard Malik Martin, sophomore Ishmael Leggett, and redshirt junior guard Jalen Carey. For newcomers, we can expect George Washington transfer Brayon Freeman to make some noise in his sophomore campaign with the Rams.

While Rhode Island won’t be a contender in the conference right away, we can expect the Rams to turn some heads around the nation with their young, talented roster.
