Atlantic 10 Basketball: 6 impact transfers to watch for 2022-23 season
By Stu Luddecke
Dae Dae Grant (Duquesne Dukes)
Duquesne might be in for another tough season after winning just one game in conference play in ‘21-22, but Keith Dambrot accomplished his most important goal this offseason – get players who can flat-out score (the Dukes finished 316th in D1 for points per game last year).
The most notable player of that archetype joining the roster this season is Miami (OH) transfer Dae Dae Grant. Grant led the RedHawks in scoring last season with 17.5 points per game, and considering how much he’ll be relied on by the Dukes’ staff, he should have a real opportunity to contend for the overall scoring title in the Atlantic 10 this year.
The 6’2” guard can penetrate, create his own shot, and score from all three levels in an efficient way (48.4% from 2, 34.3% from 3, and 85.3% from the line last season). He’s also a capable distributor – though questions remain about what players he’ll reliably be able to distribute to on this roster – with 4.1 assists per game to go along with his scoring.
Apt comparisons for Grant, because of his versatility and projected usage rates, might be recent A10 bucket-getters Ryan Daly of Saint Joe’s or Luwane Pipkins of UMass. Even if the Dukes continue to flounder this season, it’s a safe bet that they will be more entertaining to watch.
