NCAA Basketball: 10 best players from state of Mississippi of last decade
By Joey Loose
1. Quinndary Weatherspoon – Mississippi State
A standout in the state of Mississippi both at the high school and collegiate levels, Weatherspoon was a top 100 prospect who stayed home and played for the Bulldogs. A 6’4 guard from Canton, he spent four years at Mississippi State, playing that stretch under Ben Howland and becoming one of the program’s finest players.
Weatherspoon averaged double-digit points in each of his four seasons and found his way permanently into the starting lineup halfway through his freshman year. During his junior year, he helped lead the Bulldogs to the semifinals of the NIT, though his senior season was certainly the best. Not only did Weatherspoon average 18.5 points and 4.7 rebounds per game, but he helped lead the Bulldogs to their first NCAA Tournament in a decade, scoring 27 points in a loss to Liberty.
He found himself honored as All-SEC Second Team twice before landing on the First Team as a senior. Weatherspoon did fantastic work to help turn around the program at Mississippi State, while also ranking among the conference’s all-time leaders with over 2000 career points. He was a late draft pick in 2019 and has bounced between the NBA and G-League these last three seasons, picking up a championship ring with the Golden State Warriors this season.
