NCAA Basketball: Most important player on each top-25 team for 2022-23 season
4. Kentucky Wildcats – Chris Livingston
With National Player of the Year Oscar Tshiebwe back, the center position is of no need for Kentucky. Plus, they have Sahvir Wheeler, five-star freshman Cason Wallace and Illinois State transfer Antonio Reeves in the backcourt. The forward position is where things could get dicey at times. One guy who’ll have an impact is five-star freshman Livingston, capable of playing both small and power forward on the court.
Whoever plays the four-spot will have to be a good fit alongside Tshiebwe, who can’t spread the floor. Livingston is a solid shooter and good scorer overall and has the most potential of the rest of the frontcourt and the Wildcats need him to be an upgrade over Keion Brooks in order to make a run in the NCAA Tournament.
3. North Carolina Tar Heels – Caleb Love
The Tar Heels made their surprising run to the national title game, with Love being a key piece in the run. He had 30 points versus UCLA in the Sweet 16 and 28 in the Final Four win over Duke and averaged 16.0 ppg as a sophomore. Love’s ceiling is as high as any guard in NCAA Basketball but his floor is very low, as he is also capable of going 4/20 from the field.
With fellow guard RJ Davis in the backcourt and bigs Armando Bacot and Pete Nance in the frontcourt, North Carolina has plenty of offensive firepower and will be a national title contender. But they’ll need a more consistent Love that shoots better than 37% from the field to avoid having a bad night that eventually takes out the Heels.
