Big Ten Basketball: Top 25 non-freshmen players for 2022-23 season
18. Jaelin Llewellyn – Michigan Wolverines
2021-22 stats (at Princeton): 15.7 ppg, 4.1 apg, 2.5 apg
The combo guard averaged over 15 ppg in the last two years in the Ivy League and is coming off a career-high 39% shooting from three-point range. Last season, Llewellyn had 20+ points on nine occasions, including 29 points against Harvard. He’s a good scorer and capable playmaker and is set to be Michigan’s starting point guard this season.
What’s interesting is that Llewellyn wasn’t even the “point guard” for Princeton last season, as 6’7 all-around forward Tosan Evbuomwan doubled him in assists. So will the Wolverines be fine with him as the new lead guard? Hopefully, his scoring translates and he’s a solid enough passer at the Big Ten level.
17. AJ Hoggard – Michigan State Spartans
2021-22 stats: 7.0 ppg, 4.8 apg
The sophomore guard has a smaller version of a “breakout” campaign, quietly leading the team in assists overall, despite playing in just 20 mpg off the bench. Hoggard had 17 points in the Champions Classic matchup against Kansas but had 22 points in the next six games combined. His scoring was extremely inconsistent and a lack of a three-point shot hurts the guard but he had eight games with at least seven assists and two double-digit passing games as well.
Likely getting elevated to the starting lineup, look for Hoggard to play more on-ball and allow Walker, who can shoot from deep to play off. This will give the junior playmaker a chance to rack up a lot of assists and if the numbers stay the same with extended minutes, could be a candidate to lead the country in assists.
