Big Ten Basketball: Top 25 non-freshmen players for 2022-23 season
14. Donta Scott – Maryland Terrapins
2021-22 stats: 12.6 ppg, 6.2 rpg
Scott had a little more of a role offensively and while his overall numbers went up a bit compared to last year, the efficiency went down a lot. The 6’7 forward went from 44 to 29% from three-point range and 50 to 43% from the field overall. Still, he’s shown that he can be a focal point in the frontcourt, including multiple 25-point games and being in double figures in 19 of the final 23 games of the season.
With Qudus Wahab gone, Scott becomes the only proven veteran in the frontcourt. Look for him to have an even bigger role on offense and play both the four and five-spots on the court. If his percentages can get close to his sophomore season, Scott will make an All-Big Ten team.
13. Race Thompson – Indiana Hoosiers
2021-22 stats: 11.1 ppg, 7.5 rpg
The 6’8 forward plays under a teammate’s shadow in the frontcourt but Thompson had his first double-digit scoring season as a senior last year. Thompson had five double-doubles and had an eight-game in the middle of Big Ten Basketball play where he was averaging 15 ppg. He’s a good rebounder and defender and has improved on his game each year.
Thompson will always have a ceiling with his production due to someone else coming up on this list but he’s shown that he’s capable of leading his own frontcourt with the opportunity. If he has 15+ points then there’s a good chance Indiana wins.
