10. Boo Buie – Northwestern Wildcats

2021-22 stats: 14.1 ppg, 4.3 apg

While Pete Nance was the star of the team last season, Buie was once again a double-digit scorer and leading passer. The senior guard had at least eight points in all but one full game, including 27 points on 6/12 shooting against Nebraska. Due to the lack of weapons on the perimeter, Buie certainly was a volume shooter and that affected his consistency, making just 40% from the field.

He’s an underrated passer as well with nine games with at least seven assists last season as well. Northwestern wasn’t very good but was in a lot of close games, thanks in part to Buie’s play in the first 35 minutes. There’s a decent chance the senior guard could be the highest-scoring guard in the conference if he has to shoulder the scoring load, even more, this season.

9. Terrence Shannon Jr. – Illinois Fighting Illini

2021-22 stats (at Texas Tech): 10.4 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 2.0 apg

Shannon was an ideal fit with the Red Raiders as a “3 and D” wing. The 6’6 guard shot a career-high 38% from three-point range and averaged 16 ppg in the first five games of last season. He also had a trio of 20+ point games, including 23 against West Virginia. Shannon’s numbers slipped due to injuries towards the end of last season and like Mayer, wasn’t a top option in the offense.

If Shannon has a bigger role at Illinois and has similar efficiency, could very well end up as the best Illini player play. His defense can be great at times and he’s a good offensive player and with a new system could break out in a big way.
