Pac-12 Basketball: 2022 biggest offseason winners and losers
By Tuck Clarry
Loser – Stanford
This may not have been a disastrous offseason for the Cardinal, but it was certainly not the winning summer it needed to be to assure the fanbase that things will trend upwards for Jerod Haase and the team from Palo Alto. After finishing the last six weeks of the season with a 4-9 record, Haase was able to stave off complete roster attrition with the surprising news that NBA prospect Harrison Ingram would return for his sophomore season.
Ingram is due for an even bigger role this season as Jaiden Delaire transferred away from the program this offseason. Stanford added transfer talent for the first time since 2009, welcoming shooting guard Mark Jones from Davidson. Jones instantly is the best shooter on the team and will be tasked with improving the 169th-ranked three-point shooting team, according to KenPom.
It may be harsh to count Stanford as an off-season loser, but they did little to wash the stink off of their last two seasons. It’s a question of when not if as to when athletic director Bernard Muir moves off of Haase. In seven seasons, the Cardinal have failed to reach the NCAA tournament once. Until the head coach can utilize the talent he’s recruited, it’s difficult to give any other classification than where we have Stanford on this list.
