9. Max Curran – UMBC

Moving on, this 6’9 forward from Hooksett playing his entire collegiate career down at UMBC. As you might have guessed, nearly anytime this series mentions someone from UMBC, he was indeed involved in the Retrievers’ historic NCAA Tournament upset win over Virginia. Curran arrived on campus in 2016 and was part of that run during his sophomore season.

A 16-point, 8-rebound outing as a freshman reserve showed signs of brilliance, but Curran was mostly used as a reserve in his career. He lost his starting job as a sophomore and didn’t score in that upset win over Virginia. His junior year was his best season, averaging 7.5 points and 5.1 rebounds per game, but he missed most of the year with a hand injury. Unfortunately, injuries limited his final season as well, playing just nine games as a senior.

The analytics show that Curran was a great rebounder, and almost certainly could have finished among the league leaders had injuries and inconsistent play not severely limited his chances. He managed a trio of double-doubles late in his career, but you have to wonder what could have been. He may not have played a starring role, but his involvement in that upset win is something he’ll have forever.
