NCAA Basketball: 10 best players from state of New Hampshire of last decade
By Joey Loose
4. Wenyen Gabriel – Kentucky
We’ve already seen some highly rated recruits that have come from New Hampshire and Gabriel is certainly another prime example. A 6’9 forward and a five-star recruit ranked top 15 in the class of 2016, Gabriel certainly had big expectations when he arrived at the college state. Like many other top recruits in recent years, he was recruited by Kentucky, playing a pair of seasons under John Calipari with the Wildcats.
As a freshman, Gabriel averaged just 4.6 points and 4.8 rebounds per game and was a nonfactor during Kentucky’s run to the Elite Eight. He did have a 23-point performance against LSU but wasn’t playing a ton of minutes down the stretch. His second season was a bit more effective, averaging 6.8 points and 5.4 rebounds per game while leading the Wildcats in blocks. He even had a 23-point performance in the SEC Tournament against Alabama, helping the Wildcats win the league crown. Gabriel’s 16-point, 12-rebound performance in the second round of the NCAA Tournament was one of his best games.
Named to the All-SEC Tournament team, at the end of his sophomore season showed his true potential, while putting up decent rebounding and blocks numbers across that entire year. He may not have starred or played like a five-star prospect, but he was always surrounded by big talent on this Kentucky team. He went undrafted, but has played in the NBA for parts of the last three seasons on five different franchises.
