By Joey Loose
1. Trae Young – Oklahoma
With all the Sooners on today’s list, it seems fitting that one of their best players in recent memory tops the list for the state of Oklahoma. A 6’2 guard from Norman, Young was a five-star prospect who stayed in his hometown, starring for the Sooners during the 2017-18 season. He spent just his freshman year on campus but had an outstanding season and certainly goes down in Sooners history.
In that campaign, Young averaged 27.4 points and 8.7 assists per game, becoming one of the best offensive players in the entire nation right out of the gate. He had a 26-point, 22-assist effort against Northwestern State, a 48-point performance at Oklahoma State, and later contributed 28 points in an NCAA Tournament loss against Rhode Island.
Young led the entire nation in points and assists per game in an outstanding and incredible freshman season. He was named Big 12 Rookie of the Year and First Team All-American for the season, while also leading the conference in field goals and many offensive and scoring metrics. Young was already a star in the making and was then drafted with the 5th pick of the 2018 NBA Draft, starring these last few years for the Atlanta Hawks.
