NCAA Basketball: 10 best players from state of Oregon of last decade
By Joey Loose
10. Avry Holmes – San Francisco / Clemson
A 6’2 point guard from Salem, Holmes was a decent piece at a pair of colleges during his playing career. He spent the first two years of his career playing in the WCC at San Francisco before transferring out to the east coast. Holmes was a full-time starter for his final two seasons at Clemson, playing an important role in that ACC program.
He put up decent numbers off the bench as a freshman before averaging 12.5 points and 3.1 assists per game as the Dons’ starting guard the following year. He helped lead the program to the NIT and had a run of high-scoring games to end the year, including 25 points against Loyola Marymount. After sitting out a year, he was the Tigers’ starting point guard the last two seasons of his career, averaging double-digit points per game in both seasons and appearing in another NIT at the end.
Holmes had a decent run at both guard positions, playing an important role on both of these teams. He put up solid assists and steals numbers in his career while ranking among his conference’s leaders in 3-point shooting on multiple occasions. He didn’t play on any really great teams, but he played his role solidly well and there’s nothing wrong with that. After departing from Clemson in 2017, Holmes has continued his basketball career both in the G-League and overseas.
