Reserves for UConn

Guard – Hassan Diarra

The Texas A&M transfer already has a connection with the program coming in, as his brother Mamadou played for the Huskies and is currently the Director of Player Development in Storrs. The younger Diarra is coming off a year in which he played 40 games for the Aggies and averaged just over 6 PPG. He will serve as the backup point guard and sixth man for Coach Hurley.

Guard – Joey Calcaterra

The grad transfer from San Diego comes in to add some depth to the roster. Calcaterra averaged 8.5 PPG last year with the Toreros and shot 35% from three and 87% from the free throw line. It is unknown what his role will be initially, but he is expected to be in the rotation and contribute as another guy that can come off the bench and knock down a shot or two.

Forward – Samson Johnson

The lengthy 6’10” forward played sparingly last year for the Huskies, appearing in just 13 games as a freshman scoring just 22 points. When in the game, there were times that Johnson looked a little lost out there, which is normal for freshmen at such a high level. Regardless, he is going to have a big role this year as one of the first guys off the bench and perhaps even a starter if Coach Hurley wants to go big. Another guy with a lot of potential.

Forward – Alex Karaban

One of three freshmen on the roster, Karaban has an opportunity to get minutes right away. He arrived in Storrs as apart of early enrollment in January this past year but didn’t suit up. The 6’7” forward and former Top 100 recruit is known to have a smooth jumper and is just another weapon that the Huskies have that can help turn the game around.

Center – Donovan Clingan

Also a freshman, Clingan comes in as the reigning CT Gatorade Player of the Year from Bristol Central High School. He is listed at 7’2” and 265 lbs and was a Top 50 recruit. He dominated all throughout his high school career and brings some much-needed size to the roster. He is very agile for his size and like Karaban, is expected to have an opportunity to play right away in year one.

Forward – Richie Springs

Springs is entering his fourth year as a member of the Huskies program and after redshirting his first year, has played sparingly over the past two. When he gets in the game, he shows some flashes with his mid-range jumper and is actually a career 50% shooter, albeit 10 attempts across 2 seasons.

Forward – Yarin Hasson

The Israeli forward is the third of the three freshmen on the team this year, Originally committed to Denver, the 6’9” Hasson de-committed and joined the Huskies late in the summer. There isn’t a clear role just yet for him, but after joining a program that fellow Israeli had success in such as Nadav Henfield and Doron Sheffer, a role will appear soon enough.

Guard – Apostolos Roumoglou

The native of Greece just joined the Huskies in mid-September to fill in the 13th and final roster spot. Like Hasson, it is unlikely that he will receive much playing time out of the gate.

Walk-Ons – Andrew Hurley, Andre Johnson Jr., and Emmett Hendry

This year, the Huskies will have three preferred walk-ons. The only returning player of the three is Hurley, son of Dan who has been with the program each of the past two seasons. Johnson is an incoming freshman that played at South Kent Prep last season. Hendry is also a freshman who played last season at IMG Academy.
