NCAA Basketball: 5 head coaches that could be the next Scott Frost in 2022-23

Patrick Ewing
When John Thompson III was fired by Georgetown in 2017, it had come after two disappointing seasons under .500. In the ten years before, the Hoyas had been to 8 NCAA Tournaments and advanced to the Final Four back in 2007. The program was consistent and was making postseason bids, but wasn’t exactly comparable to the legendary run of success in the 1980’s under Thompson’s father. Nowadays, it’s not even comparable to that run in the 2000’s.
Former Georgetown legend Patrick Ewing took over the program after Thompson’s firing and has had limited success leading the Hoyas. The initial hope was to get the Hoyas back into the NCAA Tournament on a consistent basis but that has not happened. Ewing’s only trip to the Big Dance came in 2021 after a shocking run through the Big East Tournament. The Hoyas actually finished that season 13-13 before winning just six games this past season.
Ewing spent more than a decade on NBA coaching staffs, but Georgetown has been his first collegiate head coaching job. It’s hard to part ways with your program’s biggest basketball legend, but at some point the Hoyas need to move forward. Georgetown hasn’t rebounded during Ewing’s tenure and getting five seasons is already more than enough time to figure that out. We’re not sure how or when Ewing and the Hoyas will part ways, but it’s certainly unexpected that Georgetown will suddenly compete in a very tough Big East, especially after that horrific 6-25 effort last year.
