13. Davidson Wildcats

2021-22 record: 27-7 (15-3 in Atlantic 10)

Davidson was one of the biggest surprises in all of NCAA Basketball, thanks to Foster Loyer being one of the most impactful transfers last season. The former Michigan State point guard was perfect for now-former head coach Bob McKillop’s system and had he not gotten injured, could’ve been the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year.

Instead, it was forward Luka Brajkovic (14.4 ppg, 7.1 rpg) that won the award. The big man is gone, as well as 6’7 wing Hyunjung Lee (15.8 ppg, 6.0 rpg). And sharpshooter Michael Jones transferred out to Stanford this offseason, leaving Loyer as the lone returning double-digit returning starter.

One player that’s due for a breakout campaign is Sam Mennenga, who averaged 8.4 ppg and 5.3 rpg as a starting big man. He was effectively the fifth option on offense and still produced at a high level and should replace Brajkovic as the focal point of the frontcourt. Double-digit wing-scoring transfers, Connor Kochera and David Skogman should be able to slide into the starting lineup while returning guard Grant Huffman is another breakout candidate as he’ll have a much larger role this time around.

There’s plenty of offense on this roster for the Wildcats for them to remain in the top-tier of the A-10 and Loyer is a Player of the Year candidate. The biggest question may be the coaching, as Bob’s son and former assistant, Matt McKillop, does now that he’s in charge. If he’s anywhere near as good as his father was, the team will be just fine.
