NCAA Basketball: Preseason top 25 mid-major power rankings for 2022-23 season
1. Gonzaga Bulldogs
2021-22 record: 28-4 (13-1 in WCC)
Yes, there will be some controversy about the Bulldogs being on this list since many view them as a “power conference program”. But as long as they reside in the West Coast Conference and get their media deals and revenue from there, I’ll continue to include them. Speaking of the WCC, the team continues to nearly run through it without a loss, with Saint Mary’s being their only real threat as of late.
Once again, Gonzaga will be the favorite in each league game and most on its overall schedule, thanks to another loaded roster. WCC Player of the Year and All-American center Drew Timme is back after producing 18.4 ppg on 59% shooting and being one of the best offensive players in the country. He’s on the shortlist for National Player of the Year and makes them a clear title threat.
Also back is starting 6’7 wing and NBA prospect Julian Strawther, as well as Rasir Bolton, who shot 46% from three-point range last season. Both are double-digit scorers and complimentary players to Timme on the perimeter. Adding to that core is SoCon Player of the Year Malachi Smith, who averaged 20 ppg and 6.4 rpg at Chattanooga and is a 6’4 senior guard that can play multiple positions.
Gonzaga’s other incoming transfer is Efton Reid, a former five-star prospect at LSU. He’ll be Timme’s backup at center and adds frontcourt depth, alongside former starting forward Anton Watson, who’ll be replacing No. 2 NBA Draft pick, Chet Holmgren.
The only concern with this roster is having a proven point guard to replace Andrew Nembhard. Former five-star recruit Nolan Hickman is most likely to take over and if he can solidify the position, the Bulldogs would be nearly unstoppable. Add other rotational pieces such as Hunter Sallis and Dominick Harris and this program may have more raw talent than ever.
Gonzaga has reached a level where the other mid-major programs can’t compete with nationally. But rival Saint Mary’s has proven that they’re not unbeatable and programs such as BYU and San Francisco will have to potentially get past them if the NCAA Tournament is what they want. Yet as long as a star like Timme is around, it’ll be very difficult to achieve.
