NCAA Basketball: Analyzing top-5 for four-star 2023 G George Washington III
Virginia Cavaliers
The Cavaliers recently landed a top-50 guard in the class in Elijah Gertrude, a 6’4 off-guard in the 2023 class. Adding current freshmen Isaac McKneely and Ryan Dunn and the shooting guard/wing position is fairly stacked for the foreseeable future. There will be some room available once Kihei Clark and potentially Armaan Franklin are gone, and even Reece Beekman has pro potential as well entering his junior campaign.
The concern here is that Washington’s best chances at meaningful minutes would be if he played more at point guard and he’s arguably best at a two-guard. He’d be a nice fit at Virginia and the roster is set to get very young soon but there are some logjam concerns with the future core that has to be in consideration.
Wake Forest Demon Deacons
The Deacons are in the market for at least a couple of guards in the 2023 class, currently without any commits. The two starting guards for the team are seniors in Daivien Williamson and Florida transfer Tyree Appleby, while returning players such as Lucas Taylor and Robert McCray are still unproven in extended minutes.
The key is Marist sophomore transfer Jao Ituka. He averaged 15 ppg as a freshman at Marist but let’s see what kind of impact he’ll have at the ACC level. This is an option for Washington that could offer him a lot of minutes early on and a big role in the future. Head coach Steve Forbes is known as a great developer of talent, taking former Oklahoma guard Alondes Williams from a role player to ACC Player of the Year last season. He could do the same with Washington.
