NCAA Basketball: 10 best players from state of Utah of last decade
By Joey Loose
1. Tyler Haws – BYU
A 6’5 guard from Alpine, Haws was an incredible part of BYU basketball. Years before brother T. J. arrived on campus, Tyler was a vital piece, developing into one of the best scorers in Cougars’ history by the end of his career. He arrived at BYU in 2009, serving his 2-year LDS mission after his freshman year. Let’s just say that things were different when he returned.
His freshman year saw him league the MWC in free throw percentage while averaging 11.3 points a game. When he returned from his mission, the Cougars were now in the WCC and Haws was ready. He averaged at least 21 points per game in each of his final three seasons, becoming one of the most utilized guards in the nation and a solid shooter at that. A career-high 48-point performance came in a triple-overtime loss as a junior. He helped take Haws to the NIT semifinals as a sophomore and appeared in the NCAA Tournament in each of his final two seasons.
Haws was named WCC Player of the Year as a junior, though he earned First Team All-WCC honors for each of those three post-mission seasons. He led the conference in points, field goals, and free throws in all three of those campaigns and left campus as the program’s all-time leading scorer, surpassing Jimmer Fredette late in his senior year. There’s no question that Haws left behind a phenomenal legacy with the school and was a star for those final three years. His career continued overseas, playing most recently over in Spain.
At long last, we’ve finished our look at the best college basketball players of the past decade from the state of Utah; do you agree with the players and rankings from today’s piece?
