NCAA Basketball: 10 best players from state of Utah of last decade
By Joey Loose
6. TJ Haws – BYU
We’ll certainly get into his brother later, but Haws was a fantastic player in his own right. A fringe top 50 prospect in the class of 2014, this 6’4 guard from Alpine made great strides in his playing career at BYU, arriving after serving his two years LDS mission. Across the next four seasons, Haws started every game for the Cougars and was important to the program’s success, especially after a coaching change.
Haws hit just over 40% of his 3-pointers as a freshman, his best figures during his career. His offensive numbers always looked great, topping out at 17.8 points per game as a junior and 5.7 assists each game as a senior. He scored a career-high 35 points at San Diego as a junior and played in a pair of NIT’s with the Cougars. Clearly, he was a vital piece of the offense, both as a shooter and ball distributor, boasting very solid assist numbers throughout his career.
Three seasons ended with Haws receiving conference honors, named First Team All-WCC as both as a freshman and senior. He led the conference in free throw percentage as a junior, finishing among the conference’s all-time leaders in assists, and various other shooting metrics. This former high school star became a college star in his home state and now continues his career in the G-League.
