NCAA Basketball: 5 best players from state of Vermont of last decade
By Joey Loose
3. Candon Rusin – Marist / Vermont
This 6’4 guard from Wilmington originally arrived on the college scene way back in 2009. Rusin began his collegiate career at Marist, making a pretty considerable splash for the Red Foxes. After a pair of years there, Rusin transferred to Vermont, spending his final seasons back in his home state with the Catamounts.
As a freshman, Rusin averaged 9.5 points a game and was Marist’s leading scorer. Unfortunately, the Red Foxes won just one game that season and didn’t fare much better in his sophomore season. Rusin transferred to Vermont, playing an important role on a much better program. He was a great long-range shooter throughout his career, and that continued at Vermont, making 42% of his 3-pointers as a senior. He also averaged 9.6 points a game and helped lead the Catamounts to the America East regular season crown.
Rusin was a top 3-point shooter in both the MAAC and America East. He wasn’t a flashy player or trendsetter but was dynamic for some bad Marist teams and an important cog on some better Vermont ones. Known mostly as that long-range threat, he did have a decent role in the Vermont offense. He continued his playing career briefly over in Slovakia, though Rusin is likely on to bigger and better things now in his life.
