1. Ben Shungu – Vermont

Vermont’s best product of the last decade is another star player who stayed home and played for the Catamounts. Shungu is a 6’2 guard from Burlington who spent five seasons at Vermont, taking advantage of the bonus season of eligibility from the pandemic. His career just ended this past season, but he was a reliable piece for the Catamounts across those five years.

Shungu’s role and productivity increased across his five seasons, playing a limited role as a freshman but becoming one of the stars of the America East by the end of his career. He was one of the best defensive guards in the conference and his offensive numbers started to stand out in his final two seasons. As a super senior, Shungu averaged 16.3 points and 4.6 rebounds a game, scoring a career-high 29 points in a win over New Hampshire. He also played in two NCAA Tournaments with the Catamounts, putting up 20 points in a career-ending opening-round loss to Arkansas this past March.

An all-around fantastic player, Shungu’s talents were certainly honored by the America East. He was Defensive Player of the Year as a junior and was thrice on the All-Defense team. He was twice an All-America East player, winning the Tournament MVP in his final campaign, a year in which he also led the conference in points. He was a fantastic asset to the Catamounts on both sides of the basketball and will certainly be missed going forward for Vermont.
