1. Frank Mason III – Kansas
A 5’11 point guard from Petersburg, Mason was a fringe top 100 prospect who certainly developed into one of the stars of college basketball. He committed to Kansas and spent his entire four-year career playing under Bill Self with the Jayhawks, beginning way back in 2013.
Mason’s freshman year was spent as a piece off the bench, but he became Kansas’s full-time point guard after that. His numbers increased with each passing year, averaging around 12 points and 4 assists in each of his next two seasons. Mason helped lead the Jayhawks to the Elite Eight in his each of his final two seasons, with that senior year certainly his best. That final campaign saw Mason averaged 20.9 points, 5.2 assists, and 4.2 rebounds per game, helping lead Kansas to 31 wins and a Big Ten regular season crown. He scored at least 20 points in each of his final seven games, including during another Elite Eight run.
Though he earned All-Big 12 honors three times, that senior season saw Mason break out, earning AP Player of the Year and Big 12 Player of the Year honors. He won several national awards, including the Bob Cousy Award as the nation’s best point guard. A First Team All-American, he was among the nation’s most productive offensive players and keyed those last two Elite Eight runs with the Jayhawks. Mason was an early second-round pick of the 2017 NBA Draft and has split the last five years between the NBA and G-League.
