NCAA Basketball: 10 best players from state of Washington of last decade
By Joey Loose
1. Corey Kispert – Gonzaga
When Kispert arrived on campus at Gonzaga, he joined a program that had just made its first-ever appearance in the national title game. The 6’7 forward from Edmonds would become a driving force across four seasons with the Bulldogs, and by the time he left the Bulldogs that first national title run was not their only.
Gonzaga was loaded with talent, and Kispert played mostly off the bench as a freshman before securing a starting role in the frontcourt as a sophomore. His number started to take off as a junior, averaging 13.9 points per game in the pandemic-shortened season. The following season he had a career-high 32 points in a win over Virginia. Kispert averaged 18.6 points and 5.0 rebounds during his final collegiate campaign, helping the Bulldogs to an undefeated run that lasted until a loss in the title game to Baylor. Kispert scored in double figures in all but one game that year.
Twice named First Team All-WCC, Kispert was a First Team All-American as a senior, winning WCC Player of the Year and the Julius Erving Award. He was one of the nation’s top scorers and led the conference in free throw and 3-point shooting. While Gonzaga couldn’t finish their remarkable season with an unbeaten national championship, it’s clear that Kispert developed into one of the most incredible players in recent Gonzaga history. He was soon after drafted in the middle of the first round by the Washington Wizards.
