NCAA Basketball: 10 best players from state of Wisconsin of last decade
By Joey Loose
10. Vander Blue – Marquette
This 6’4 guard from Madison throws us right into our list by focusing on someone who starred in the state. Blue was a talented shooting guard who made the short journey east, starring for three years at Marquette under Buzz Williams. He arrived on campus way back in 2010 and was one of the best players in the old Big East by the end of his career.
He averaged decent numbers mostly off the bench as a freshman but was a full-time starter for his final two seasons. He had a 26-point outburst early in his sophomore year and helped lead the Golden Eagles to Sweet Sixteen runs in each of his first two seasons. His finest effort came in that final year. As a junior, he averaged 14.8 points and 3.2 rebounds per game, helping lead Marquette to the Elite Eight for the first time in a decade. He had a near-career-high with a 29-point performance in the second round of that NCAA Tournament in a win over Butler.
Blue was named Second Team All-Big East as a junior, an honor certainly deserved after helping lead Marquette on a fantastic season. Even discounting those seven NCAA Tournament wins, Blue helped push this Marquette program in a great direction a decade ago and ranked as one of the better offensive players in the conference near the end of his career. After skipping his senior season, Blue has spent the last decade bouncing around in his basketball career, playing briefly in the NBA, but mostly appearing in the G-League and overseas.
