NCAA Basketball: 10 best players from state of Wisconsin of last decade
By Joey Loose
3. Sam Hauser – Marquette / Virginia
Wisconsin’s best high school basketball player in 2016, Hauser was actually born in New Mexico before growing up in Stevens Point in central Wisconsin. This 6’8 forward was a top 100 recruit and made his way to Marquette, spending three seasons with the Golden Eagles. Hauser then transferred to Virginia to spend his final collegiate season with the Cavaliers.
Hauser was a vital piece at Marquette for each of those three seasons, playing in a pair of NCAA Tournaments and having some impressive offensive performances. He averaged just over 14 points a game in both his sophomore and junior seasons and scored a career-high 31 points as a junior against Georgetown. During his senior year at Virginia, he averaged 16.0 points and 6.8 rebounds a game, starring as the leading scorer and top shooter for a Cavaliers team that won the ACC regular season title before being upset in the Big Dance.
He was named Second Team All-Big East at the end of his time at Marquette and won First Team All-ACC honors as a senior at Virginia. An above-average rebounder, he led both conferences in 3-point shooting at one point, making just under 44% of his long-range shots in his career. Hauser was an effective offensive weapon and an impressive shooter, contributing well on both of these programs. His career has continued with the Boston Celtics in a minimal role.
