Carl Cherenfant is viewed as an elite athlete and defender in the 2023 class. And Memphis Basketball was able to land his commitment.

The wing position for Memphis Basketball has gone through a ton of changes in just the past 16 months. Players such as Emoni Bates, Earl Timberlake, and Landers Nolley were on the roster before but all left at the beginning of this offseason.

To replace them was a new batch of transfers from the portal. Keonte Kennedy (UTEP), Elijah McCadden (Georgia Southern), and Damaria Franklin (Illinois-Chicago) are on the team, although all of them are entering their 5th year of college. So odds are good that the Tigers will have to replace them a year from now as well.

After putting on the 2022 class, Memphis has been much more aggressive in landing talent for 2023. They already have a commitment in four-star shooting guard Ryan Forrest so far and now after today, has another future Tiger on board.

Carl Cherenfant is a consensus three-star prospect in the 2023 recruiting class, who comes from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He’s a 6’5 wing/small forward who is known for being an effective defender that can guard several positions. Cherenfant has good athleticism and on offense likes to get to the basket and out in transition.

His shooting and overall offense are a work in progress but his versatility and ability to affect the game without simply scoring make him a good prospect to develop. He’ll likely be around for 3/4 years and fits Memphis’ style of being an athletic team that can play high-level defense.

The Tigers beat out both St. John’s and UCF for Cherenfant’s services and he has a decent chance at cracking the rotation as a freshman, depending on what the team does in the transfer portal next offseason. Head coach Penny Hardaway will continue landing his share of top-30 prospects and five-star players. But guys like Cherenfant who’ll be around for several years are also key to the program having sustaining success.
