Just a couple of weeks before the start of the 2022-23 NCAA Basketball season and the transfer still somehow remains a thing. This time though, it comes in very unique circumstances, as Manhattan made an unexpected decision to part ways with head coach Steve Masiello.

The result of that has already seen serious consequences, as the team’s best player, Jose Perez, has elected to transfer out of the program. He led the team with 18.9 ppg and 4.5 apg and was the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year heading into this upcoming season.

In four years and 97 total games played, Perez is a career 15.1 ppg and 3.6 apg performer at Gardner-Webb, Marquette, and Manhattan last season. He only played 10 games with the Golden Eagles during the covid year but has proven that he’s a legit scorer and overall playmaker.

Since announcing his intentions to leave on Tuesday, Perez has already had a number of programs reach out. Because the fall semester has already started, the 6’5 guard wouldn’t be eligible to play until around late December/early January depending on which school he chooses. He also has the option of sitting out the entire season and being eligible for the 2023-24 campaign but with the opportunity to play for a bigger school, there’s a strong chance that we’ll see him at the midway point of this year.

Assuming that Perez wants to play this season, there are still plenty of teams that could use another guard in the backcourt. Here are eight teams to potentially keep an eye on in the coming weeks.
