4. Can Julian Strawther be Gonzaga’s second-best player?

There’s no question that All-American center Drew Timme is the best player on this roster. Last season’s 2nd and 3rd-best players were arguably Holmgren and starting point guard Andrew Nembhard, both of whom are gone. The other two starters that are back are sharpshooting guard Rasir Bolton, as well as junior wing Strawther.

After not playing much as a freshman, the 6’7 forward started on the wing, averaging 11.8 ppg and 5.4 rpg on 50% shooting from the field and 37% from three-point range. Strawther had 13 games of at least 15 points and started off last year strong but fell off in the second half. In his defense, he was the 5th option at times in the loaded starting lineup.

This year, Strawther has a great opportunity to become a focal point of the offense. He can score anywhere on the court and has deep range. But he’ll also have to make better decisions with his shot selection and be more consistent with his production. He shot under 40% from the field versus Tennessee and didn’t have a noticeable impact overall. The expectations this year is around 15 ppg and to become a legit 2nd option behind Timme on offense.

Strawther explored the NBA Draft process this offseason and has the tools and measurements to play at the next level. A breakout campaign from him could easily put the junior in 1st round range. There’s lots of potential and pressure on him to succeed, both individually and as a team overall.
