Duke vs South Carolina State: 2022-23 college basketball game preview, TV schedule

Can Duke dominate in this game unlike their first win against Jacksonville? How long will South Carolina State be in this game? How will Duke look before their final tune-up game before their primetime showdown with Kansas?

South Carolina State Upstaters go into this game after winning their first game in a huge blowout. They beat Brevard, 90-42. The Upstaters had a combination of scorers in the matchup that enabled them to win. Floyd Rideau, Seny N’Diaye, and Justin Bailey led the way with them all having 12 points on solid shooting.

South Carolina State will try to pull off the upset behind Jordan Gainey. Gainey earned preseason first-team All-south honors this year. He is the first player to make the All-South team since the team joined the conference in 2020. If South Carolina State wants to win this game, they will need a big performance from Gainey and the company.

The Duke Blue Devils go into this game after beating Jacksonville in their first game. While the game ended up being a blowout, it was relatively close for way too long. It was only a three-point game with five minutes left in the first half. Despite this, Duke went ahead shortly after and the game was basically over.

This was Jon Scheyer’s first win as Duke’s head coach (with the official head coach title).  Duke was without two of its best players in Derrick Lively the second and Dariq Whitehead in the first game of the season. Both of these players are top five players in last year’s high school class. The Blue Devils are led by Jeremy Roach (assuming both of their players from the Jacksonville game stay injured).

I don’t think Scheyer will rush both of these players back from injury considering the level of the opponent. If Lively or Whitehead play any minutes expect them to play limited minutes, ahead of their primetime matchup against Kansas.

While I do think that the Duke Blue Devils will dominate in this game, I think this game will be good for college basketball fans to watch. I will look for Duke to completely dominate in this game unlike their previous tune-up game on Monday. Duke simply has too much talent to lose to South Carolina State.

That will not be the case against Kansas. Kansas despite missing Bill Self, will be a worthy opponent against the Blue Devils. It is important for the Blue Devils to beat Kansas, as it is an early quad 1 win.

Most likely, it will be Duke’s only top-tier 1 opponent before conference play kicks off near the new year. If Duke wants to feel confident about winning that game, they need to dominate against South Carolina State.

Prediction: Duke 90, South Carolina State 45
